The WNMU softball team (15-14, 8-2) swept the visiting Heartland Conference opponent Montana State University-Billings Yellowjackets (7-19, 0-2), winning the first game 8-0 in six innings of play and pulling out a win in exciting fashion, 2-1, in game two. The Wednesday afternoon double-header was the beginning of a long road series for MSUB and their HLC opener.
Game one was all Western as Molly Yetman and the WNMU defense nabbed a shutout, posting 13 hits and scoring 8 runs. The Yellowjackets had 5 hits, 1 error and failed to cross the plate. Yetman (8-4) earned the win sitting 10 Yellowjackets down; while Terina Stacks (0-7) was charged with the loss.
Generating some offense for Western were Meredith Drahota (3-4, 2 RBIs, 2 runs), Shaunna York (3-4, 2 RBIs, 2 runs), Cassidi Caringi (2-4, 1 RBI), Tiffany DeVaurs (2-4, 2 RBIs), Emily Robinson (2-3, 2 runs), and Crystal Martin (1-2, 1 run).
For MSUB, Anna Henderson (1-3), Cari Dunlap (1-3), Rachel Quarnburg (2-3) and Stephanie Gosselin (1-2).
Debbie Yescas crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Lisa Moore that got by catcher Aysha Maddox giving the Lady 'Stangs the victory in game two, 2-1.
The Yellowjackets finished with 6 hits, and 1 run. WNMU had 4 hits, 2 coming in the seventh inning to capture the win, 2 runs, and 2 errors.
On the mound gaining the win was NM native Priscilla Garcia (6-9). Suffering the loss for Billings was Lisa Moore (4-9).
Offensively for Western were York (1-3), DeVaurs (2-3, 1 run), Yescas (1-2, 1 RBI, 1 run).
Designated player Crystal Bentley (1-4), Henderson (1-3), Quarnburg (1-3), Christy Wankel (1-3), Jessica Frank (1-3, 1 run) and Moore (1-3) rounded out the MSUB offense.
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow March 30, 2006 at the WNMU softball stadium in Silver City, NM. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
